Saba Gorgodze
(Tbilisi, 1995) lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. He studied photography at Ilia State University. Analog photography is the prime medium for Saba Gorgodze artistic expression. His process begins with long periods of reflection and observation, at times involving years of thought before picking up the camera. He chooses his subjects randomly, often capturing a sizable amount of material over several years. He revisits and revises the amassed material to create a series of works unified by a conceptual thread born out of the artists openness to see. Gorgodze photographs blend raw and naturally refined aesthetic visuals, often obscuring the subject in favor of ideas and concepts expressed through lines and shadows. His choice of black and white allows for a fresh exploration of his own sensory experience of seeing and the subject of observation. This monochrome approach opens the door to a degree of abstraction, infusing his subjects with alternative meaning and form, transforming them into unidentifiable yet familiar and at times uncanny visuals. As part of his creative process, Saba Gorgodze focuses on introspection and personal growth as much as on capturing and revising his images. The act of seeing is instrumental and integral to his approach to image-making. Considering himself a conduit, Gorgodze strives to maintain and expand his openness to seeing all that is to be seen and brought into focus. The artist accesses an unadulterated vision of the world around him through daily interactions with subjects and objects that ultimately inform and sustain his works.
